For the first time, MAL PELO takes on the stage and choreographic direction of a classical opera: ORFEO ed EURIDICE by C. W. Gluck.

In 2025, José Luis Rivero, Artistic Director of the Auditorio de Tenerife, invites María Muñoz and Pep Ramis to assume the stage and choreographic direction of the opera Orfeo and Euridice, guided by the desire to explore the hybridization between classical opera and contemporary dance—a proposal that MAL PELO accepts as a new challenge in its artistic trajectory.

Without renouncing fidelity to the libretto and while preserving the order of the acts and scenes in relation to the musical score, MAL PELO’s approach involves the creation of a counter-narrative that opens the way to a more contemporary and complex reflection on love, suffering, and death, the central themes of the tragedy. The aim is thus to contribute a new poetic and philosophical dimension in which the company’s distinctive signature can be recognized: the discourse, thoughts, and reflections that form part of its artistic practice.

On the musical side, mezzo-soprano Teresa Iervolino will perform the role of Orfeo, soprano Ana Vieira Leite will sing Euridice, and soprano Mira Alkhovik will embody Amore. Together with the Coro Titular Ópera de Tenerife – Intermezzo and the baroque ensemble Concerto München, they will bring the sounds of the eighteenth century into the present, under the musical direction of Jordi Francés.

“What most reconciles me with my own death is the image of a place: a place where your bones and mine are buried together in a confused disorder. With you I can imagine a place where being calcium phosphate is enough. This image of our closeness gives me a feeling of peace. I know it is strange, but that is how it is.”
